Setting a Bold Course
Your support is now more powerful than ever.

Forging Tools
In 1972, a man had a vision. It was a vision of shaping lives. It was a vision of placing durable, reliable, eternal tools in the hands of students. Much like a craftsman shapes wood in the woodshop, he envisioned a school that shaped the lives of apprentices: an Apprenticeshop. That man was our founder, Lance Lee, and since its inception his vision has matured and evolved.
Lee’s tradition of inspiring personal growth, of placing steadfast tools such as self-reliance, patience and tenacity into the hands of students, holds fast today. In the spring of 2010, we recognized that mission is best embodied under the masthead “The Apprenticeshop.” The old skin of “Atlantic Challenge” simply no longer fit.
In both our boatbuilding and sailing programs, Apprenticeshop students master skills through direct, hands-on experience. On the first day of sailing class, a beginner is at the tiller. On day one in the apprenticeshop, an apprentice cuts into a piece of wood. This “learning by doing” forges tools that endure the ages.

Your dollars place enduring tools into the hands of our students. The hands-on learning experience forges tools such as tenacity, self-reliance, patience and creativity: steadfast tools that endure.

Set a Bold Course for a BROAD REACH

In 2010, The Apprenticeshop served nearly 1,000 members of the community. Now, we are setting a bold course for the future. Having collaborated with the local youth programs of Youthlinks and Trekkers, plans are underway to reach further through collaborations with Maine museums and colleges. Partnerships with organizations that share our values allow us to broaden our reach beyond the mid-coast and throughout the state.

Help us forge the tools and stay the course. Please make your gift today.
