Our 2012 Programs & Workshops catalog is now available. You can download a copy here: 2012 Programs & Workshops Catalog. Because class sizes are limited, early registration is encouraged.
In 2012 our short course schedule includes evening, weekday and weekend offerings. In the shop you will find new courses in tuning vintage hand tools, sharpening, basic joinery, sewing a canvas bucket, making a Greenland kayak paddle and more. Rockland Community Sailing has added adult courses in navigation, history and racing.

Along with 11 returning apprentices, The Apprenticeshop welcomed Bridget Jividen from San Antonio, TX, Christopher Konecky from Brooklyn, NY, Kirk Folk from Rockland, ME, and Daniel Creisher from Shapleigh, ME, into the shop on January 3, 2012. All four have signed on as full-time, two year students.

Creating a half hull model

Half Hull Model Building
Create a half hull model as a means of understanding and designing a traditional boat, or just work to produce this art form as a decoration or gift. You’ll learn the use of traditional tools and time-honored methods to build an accurate representation of a boat. All tools supplied.
Evening Workshop:
May 7-16, Mondays & Wednesdays, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Fee: $199.00 + $20.00 materials fee

Lofting skills

Lofting
Offered in both a skill building, weekend format and a more in-depth, full week workshop (includes picking-up molds and backbone set-up), participants learn to understand the art of lofting a traditional small boat by laying down and fairing lines. Learn to read tables of offsets and develop lines as you move toward a deeper understanding of how to translate and draw boat plans to full size in multiple perspectives.
Weekend Workshop: May 26/27, 9:00 to 5:00. Fee: $265.00
Full Week Workshop: July 9-13, 9:00 to 5:00. Fee: $500.00

Planking workshop

Planking
Learn to fit and hang a lapstrake plank as it applies to lining off the hull, spiling, beveling, cutting a gain and using copper rivets. Each student works on their own plank on a real boat. Offered in both a skill building weekend and more intense full week format. Full week includes framing, patterning, steaming and carvel planking. All tools and materials supplied.
Weekend Workshop: June 2/3, 9:00 to 5:00. Fee: $265.00
Full Week Workshop: July 16-20, 9:00 to 5:00. Fee: $500.00

Fitting out a skiff

Fitting Out and Finishing
Learn patterning, fitting and fastening the structural pieces of a small boat. Learn how breasthooks, quarter knees, inwales, risers and thwarts fit against curved surfaces. All tools and materials supplied.
Full Week Workshop: July 23-27, 9:00 to 5:00. Fee: $500.00
