The Apprenticeshop is approved for Veteran’s Administration educational assistance benifits by the Maine State Approving Agency for Veteran’s Education Programs.

This includes both our 2-year Apprenticeship in traditional boat building and seamanship and our 12-week intensive boat building program.

VA benifits may also include a housing and tool allowance.

Our 12-week intensive program is a great introduction to the world of wooden boat building.  In our Shop you’ll construct a small boat of your choice, under the guidance of Shop instructors and along side other students and Apprentices.  We offer several boat options, including a traditioanl skiff, a plywood sailing dinghy, or a kayak.  Unlike a one or two week “quick course”, our 12-week program gives you the opportunity to learn about tool use, sharpening, and various methods of traditional or modern wooden boat construction.  You will have the time to completely finish your boat — including paint and varnish.  You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in everything that’s happening at the Shop while you are here.  Shop activities might include sailing in the summer or blacksmithing in the winter.  Our shop is located on the harbor, in beautiful Rockland, Maine.
