12-Week Intensive Boatbuilding Program

For those who want to learn the basics of traditional boat building through hands-on experience but are not seeking a 2-year commitment, we offer a 12-Week Intensive Boatbuilding Program. 12-Week students focus on building a Susan skiff (a flat-bottom, lapstrake design skiff), or other approved small boat.

Students who have the most successful 12-Week Programs are curious and self-motivated boat builders who are willing to seek help and ask questions. Under the guidance of Shop staff, 12-Week students schedule their work independently.  At the same time, they are invited and encouraged to participate in the Shop community as they work alongside the Apprentices.

During their time in Rockland, 12-Week Intensive Boatbuilding students have the opportunity to observe and learn from the construction of other boat projects ongoing in the Shop. Every Friday morning the entire Shop community participates in Friday Walk-Around where progress, problems and solutions are discussed. In addition, 12-Week Builders are invited to participate in Friday activities (sailing, lectures, demonstrations and such), with apprentices and staff.
