Introduction To Letter Carving

In this full day class, participants will learn the basics of letter carving with hand tools from experienced carver and educator, Reed Hayden. All tools and materials are provided. Participants will leave with an understanding of the history of New England maritime woodcarving. A variety of techniques, tools and materials will be discussed and demonstrated. Students will have a hands-on experience and the opportunity to take home a small name board of their own creation. 

**This course is available to participants ages 18 and up.

Instructor: Reed Hayden

Reed has earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from the University of Massachusetts and was employed by Amidon and Company in Sandwich, MA, eventually moving up to become the lead woodcarver. He began his boat building career at Ballentine's Boat Shop in Cataumet, MA, and went on to work for Brooklin Boat Yard for 15 years as a carpenter. Reed received his Master's of Fine Arts from the University of Maine in 2020 and currently owns and operates his own sign and maritime wood carving business, Hayden Sign Company, in Surry, Maine.
