2 Class Sessions
This popular weekend workshop teaches the basics of sand casting using a setup that you can cheaply and easily replicate at home. Techniques reviewed include making patterns, preparing molds, pouring bronze, and metal finishing. All tools and materials are provided. You may make and bring your own pattern or use one of the ones we provide if you prefer. If you do choose to bring your own pattern to cast, it should be no larger than 6" in any dimension.
Chris Gamage was born and raised in Rockland, and went on to attend The Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale and the University of Maine in Orono after graduating high school. During his years at UMO, he was involved in the studio art program and the foundry program specifically. After finishing at UMO, he started a foundry at his home and has been using it to make his own pieces, as well as to cast pieces for other local artists and members of the local boating community since. While running his own foundry, he spent 9 years at Lie-Nielson Toolworks polishing and machining bronze and iron castings for high end woodworking tools. For the last 11 years, he has worked as a fabricator at Rockport Marine making bronze, stainless steel and aluminum hardware for a wide variety of boats. You can see exmples of Chris' work here.
